Strong nations invest in their people, and few investments have a greater long-term impact than education. Across St. Kitts and Nevis, the Government continues to advance projects that strengthen communities, modernize public infrastructure, and create opportunities for future generations. Among the most significant of these is the redevelopment of Basseterre High School, an institution that has shaped the lives of thousands of Kittitians and Nevisians for nearly six decades.

Today, a new chapter is taking shape on the school’s historic Victoria Road campus. The new Basseterre High School is more than a modern educational facility. It represents a long-term investment in the country’s future, preserving the legacy of one of its most respected institutions while providing students with an environment designed to prepare them for the opportunities of tomorrow.

Prime Minister the Honourable Dr. Terrance Drew recently visited the construction site to review progress and reaffirm the Government’s commitment to delivering the project. Addressing the visible work taking place across the site, he said:

“I wanted people to see firsthand the tremendous amount of work that is taking place here. I believe people will be shocked by just how much progress has been made.”

Preserving a Proud Legacy

Established in 1967 through the merger of The Grammar School and The Girls School, Basseterre High School has long been recognized as one of the Federation’s premier secondary schools. Generations of graduates have gone on to become educators, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, public servants, and leaders across St. Kitts and Nevis and beyond.

Affectionately known as the “Birthplace of Champions,” the school has also produced internationally recognized athletes, including World 100-meter Champion Kim Collins, whose achievements have brought global recognition to the Federation.

As the school evolved over the decades, the need for a modern campus became increasingly evident. Following the closure of the original buildings in 2014 due to health and structural concerns, students continued their education at temporary locations while plans for a permanent redevelopment progressed. Throughout this period, the school’s identity, traditions, and commitment to excellence remained unchanged.

Building for the Next Generation

The new Basseterre High School has been designed with the future in mind. According to the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the campus will feature 32 modern classrooms, dedicated science laboratories, computer labs, music rooms, upgraded sporting facilities, a lecture room, and a 1,200-seat auditorium capable of serving both the school and the wider community. The campus will also be fully accessible and delivered as a climate-resilient turnkey facility equipped with modern technology, furniture, and learning resources.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, the Honourable Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, has previously described the redevelopment as a “Legacy School,” emphasizing that it is intended to honor the institution’s distinguished history while creating a world-class learning environment for generations to come.

The project is also utilizing precast concrete construction technology, with structural components manufactured in a controlled environment before being transported to St. Kitts and assembled on site. This modern construction method supports efficiency, quality control, and long-term resilience.

Visible Progress and National Commitment

Construction activity is now clearly visible across the Victoria Road site.

During his July 2026 inspection, Prime Minister Drew highlighted not only the physical progress but also the economic benefits the project is creating for local communities.

“We can see there are many local workers here, along with other experts, and we are pleased with the number of jobs that have been provided for our people.”

Government officials have noted that the redevelopment extends beyond constructing a new school. It represents a broader commitment to strengthening public infrastructure while investing in the country’s human capital.

Prime Minister Drew also reflected on the significance of reaching this stage of the project, stating:

"This is the fulfillment of a promise to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. Today, we have more than blocks. We have concrete, we have steel, and we have materials from the quarry. That is real progress."

Turning Investment Into Lasting Public Benefit

The redevelopment of Basseterre High School also reflects the evolving role of the St. Kitts and Nevis Citizenship by Investment Programme in supporting national development.

The project is being delivered through the Programme’s Public Benefit Option (PBO), which channels qualifying investments toward projects that strengthen the country’s infrastructure and improve the lives of its citizens. Rather than focusing solely on economic contribution, the Public Benefit Option is designed to create lasting value through carefully selected national initiatives.

His Excellency Calvin St. Juste, Executive Chairman of the Citizenship Unit, described the significance of the initiative:

“The redevelopment of Basseterre High School represents an investment not only in infrastructure, but in the future of our people. Education remains one of the most powerful tools for national development, and this partnership reflects our commitment to ensuring that the Citizenship Programme continues to create tangible and lasting impact for the citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

ClientReferrals serves as the designated Public Benefactor for the Basseterre High School Public Benefit Option, working in collaboration with the Citizenship Unit and the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis to support the successful delivery of the project. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to responsible investment, transparency, and sustainable development.

Prime Minister Drew underscored the broader significance of the initiative when announcing the collaboration:

“Basseterre High School occupies a special place in the history and development of our Federation. This initiative represents far more than the redevelopment of a school. It is an investment in our youth, our communities, and the future of St. Kitts and Nevis.”

Investing in the Future

Infrastructure projects are often measured by construction milestones, budgets, or completion dates. The new Basseterre High School should also be measured by the opportunities it will create for future generations.

By combining thoughtful public policy with strategic investment, St. Kitts and Nevis is strengthening one of its most respected educational institutions while reinforcing its long-term vision for national development. When students eventually walk through the doors of the new campus, they will inherit more than modern classrooms and advanced facilities. They will become part of a legacy that has shaped the Federation for generations and will continue to do so for decades to come.

As construction continues on Victoria Road, the new Basseterre High School stands as a powerful symbol of progress, partnership, and the country’s enduring commitment to investing in its people.
